Raden Kyoko & Gekko
SOUVERÄN® 800

Edition of 200 sets

“Kyokko” (Sunlight) and “Gekko” (Moonlight) are Raden fountain pens, handmade with mother-of-pearl particles.

Kyokko
“Kyokko” translates as “sunlight” and is made with the abalone shell from Japan Sea. As the size of the abalone is small, the parts used for Raden are limited. It is one of the most colorful abalone parts that reflect rainbow colors.

The abalone shell is placed on the ground and flattened with a hard stone into very thin sheets. These sheets are cut into narrow strips and then affixed to the coating of lacquer around the cap and the barrel of the M800 fountain pen. And once again, it is coated with lacquer, and then the surface is polished.

Gekko
“Gekko” means “moonlight” in Japanese. This fountain pen is made with the Australian abalone shell. Though the size of this abalone is big, the blue color part of this abalone is small. So, it is necessary to select the best blue color parts. The abalone shell is placed on the ground and flattened with a hard stone into very thin sheets. These sheets, then, are cut into narrow strips and then affixed to the coating of lacquer around the cap and the barrel of the M800 fountain pen. Once again, it is coated with lacquer, and then the surface is polished.

The Pelikan logos are drawn with the famous Maki-e technique, surrounded by matching colors of particles of the abalone shell.

Raden Moonlight
SOUVERÄN® 1000

Edition of 200 specimens

Mother-of-Pearl inlay craft work is a technique in which the mother-of-pearl of the great green turban of the abalone is ground with a grind stone to a fine thickness and then embedded or glued on lacquer-coated surfaces. This decorating method utilizes the feature of the shellfish parts that glitter beautifully when the light shines on them. The limited edition pen is the “Moonlight (Gekko)” and is based on the M1000.

For the “M1000 Moonlight”, Australian abalone is used. Only the parts where the blue-colored glaze is most beautiful are cut in the shape of a band. These are placed on the cap and barrel of the pen by hand piece by piece. Then black lacquer coatings are applied and polished several times. After being coated with urethane followed by a drying process, the surface is polished several more times.

Next, after the final polish, the name of the artist and the limited edition number are written on the pen surface with the maki-e technique. Then, flour gold is applied and allowed to dry. Finally, after the application of the wipe-lacquering and drying processes, the surface is finished with the final polish.
